In this weeks Gospel reading, we witness Jesus acting with authority over unclean spirits. Acceptance of Jesus’s authority remains a challenge for us today. In our first reading, we are reminded by Moses that a prophet’s authority comes not from the prophet’s own merit by from their reliance on God. True prophets speak not their own words but God’s. As we witness the beginning of Jesus’s public ministry, we get an understanding of the kind of authority Jesus will exert. Jesus will set boundaries and declare difficult moral teachings, but he is able to do so because his authority is based on love.
This week on January 24th we commemorate the Tornado that nearly destroyed our community of Deer Park. We are still grateful to God for safely delivering us all through the storm. Now the real work begins again. If you have been following the progress on the rebuild on our Facebook page, you see there has been a tremendous about of progress. Please continue to pray for the community of Deer Park and the St. Hyacinth community.
Place on your calendars, April 28th for the parish Spring festival. Raul Turner will be the festival chair for the event this year and he is asking for everyone’s help to revive the spring festival for our community.
For 2024, Cardinal DiNardo has assessed our parish DSF goal at $81,000. DSF supports more than 64 ministries and programs that serve the faithful of the Archdiocese and us here at St. Hyacinth. From Catholic chaplains at the hospitals and the Port of Houston, to religious education training for our teachers (who pass on their faith to our children), to outreach to seniors, to youth ministry, to soup kitchens, to Catholic Charities ministry to the poor and disenfranchised, and to training for seminarians, deacons and priests, the DSF provides funding for people and program that serve us all. Go to: https://www.archgh.org/ways-to-give/diocesan-services-fund-dsf/donate-to-dsf/ and give to DSF 2024. Thank you for your generosity.
Finally, I ask everyone to pray for the young people of our parish who are on their Confirmation retreat this weekend. As this group of young people move closer to celebrating the Confirmation with Cardinal DiNardo in the Spring, lets keep each of these young people in your prayers. And pray for the Staff, Mrs. Pamela Johnson, the Director of Faith Formation, and all of the volunteers who will be helping with the retreat.
