In the Gospel reading this Sunday, the merchants and money changers that Jesus drives from the temple were providing a service for those who came to worship, making the required items for the celebrations available. Jesus saw that the work of the money changers was becoming a distraction, taking over space that should have belonged to only God. The Gospel today reminds us that many things in our life that are inherently harmless can become problematic when they are prioritized in an unhealthy way. Whenever something takes up space in our hearts that ought to belong to God, it is time drive out distractions for a time in order for us to reset our priorities.
Lent is a season of cleansing out the sanctuaries of our bodies and minds. We work to rid ourselves of the temptations that distract us from discipleship through times of prayer, fasting and almsgiving.
For 2024, Cardinal DiNardo has assessed our parish DSF goal at $81,200. DSF supports more than 60 ministries and programs that serve the faithful of the Archdiocese and us here at St. Hyacinth. Envelopes are in the narthex or you can go online and give at :https://www.archgh.org/ways-to-give/diocesan-services-fund-dsf/donate-to-dsf/ Thank you in your generosity in supporting DSF 2024.
With the season of lent, we welcome our Friday Fish Fry sponsored by our Knights of Columbus. Those of you who have attended in the past know that this dinner is not to be missed. Every Friday during Lent, from 5-7p.m., the K of Cs will be serving a delicious fish dinner for your takeout pleasure.
On Fridays as well, we will have Stations of the Cross in the church beginning at 7:00 p.m.
STHY will have our annual Lenten Penance Service on Tuesday March 13th at 7:00 pm in the Religious Education Building Classrooms. We will have multiple priest confessors available for the Sacrament of Reconciliation that night.
Finally, I want to address an issue that affects the Sunday Weekend Mass in the Church. I understand that there are many reasons for people and families to be late for Mass. However, over the last few months, people have been walking into Mass and seating themselves while the readings, Psalm response, and the gospel readings are taking place. This action is extremelydistracting for those proclaiming the word and for those already seated. I ask, please; if you are late for Mass, please wait to be seated after the readings for the Mass are completed. We will give you enough time to find a seat.
