In our first reading from this Sunday’s lectionary, is a passage from the book of kings that tells the story of a wealthy woman from Shunem who showed hospitality to the prophet Elisha. The woman invited Elisha to her home and prepared a room for him to stay. Elisha was grateful for her kindness and asked if there was anything he could do for her in return. The woman replied that she had everything she needed but she had no son. Elisha then prophesied that she would have a son within a year.
The passage is often interpreted as an example of the importance of hospitality and generosity. We are all called to generosity. It also highlights the power of faith and the rewards that come from trusting in God. When we show our generosity to those around us, we are demonstrating our faith.
In our Gospel reading for the week, we have Jesus giving instructions to his disciples before sending them out on a mission to preach the gospel. He reminds them that there is a need for them to prioritize one’s relationship with God above all other relationships. We are all call to see the importance of following Jesus and being willing to make sacrifices for him.
