Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.”
He then said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.”
He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” [Jesus] said to him, “Feed my sheep."
-- John 21:15-17
As Disciples of Christ we are called out of our love to care for the Master’s sheep.
St. Hyacinth answers that call with the Parish Social Ministry's Light of Christ Disciples.
Since 2012, dozens of St. Hyacinth parishioners have led the volunteer efforts of Catholic Charities' twice-monthly Food Fairs at the Guadalupe Basic Needs Center on Houston's East Side. The Center serves struggling families from all over the Greater Houston area. The Food Fairs provide fresh produce -- 14,000 to 17,000 pounds of it -- from the Houston Food Bank. In every weather, volunteers tear down pallets of food and bag and stack groceries for between 150 and 300 families who line up on Food Fair Saturdays.
Last year more than 40 parishes participated in the Food Fairs -- but St. Hyacinth has been the constant.
