Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
Preparation, waiting and hope are the main themes of this Sunday’s Gospel readings. Jesus gives us a parable that is filled with ancient imagery. As Jesus tells us, to be vigilant in preparation for the coming of the Son of Man; our preparation has to be intentional and constant.
Pope Pius XII dogmatically proclaimed the assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary as a matter of faith in 1950. In Pope Pius XII Apostolic Constitution “Munificentissimus Deus” (Most Bountiful God), which defined the dogma, contains the Pontiff's accounts of many longstanding traditions by which the Church has celebrated the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary throughout its history. The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary recalls the spiritual and physical departure of the mother of Jesus Christ from the earth, when both her soul and her body were taken into the presence of God. The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a holy day of obligation. STHY will have three mass celebrations for this solemnity: August 14th, Vigil Mass 7:00 pm, August 15th Masses 8:00am and 7:00 pm.
August is here and that means that we will be celebrating the commemoration of our St Hyacinth Feast day and Parish 54th anniversary. We will have our St Hyacinth Parish Feast day celebrations with a reception, in Guyot Hall after the Sunday Noon Mass on August 18th. Let us all make plans to join in the celebration of the life of our parish.
The Summer can be a very busy time for families and during the vacation season it is easy to forget that STHY needs your donations. Setting up recurring donations with Faith Direct is an easy way to make sure STHY still receives your donations while you're away. Enrollment forms are available in the Narthex, Church office, parish website or you can visit Faith Direct’s secure website at www.faithdirect.net to enroll on line. Our parish code is TX526. We will be keeping you and your families in prayer during your summer travels!
Religious Education classes will be starting in September, and now is the time to start thinking about the upcoming religious Education school year. With more than 600 children in some level of Religious education this year at STHY, we need to have a head start in preparing for this fall’s Religious Education classes. Registration is ongoing. Please register on the parish website: Sthyacinth.org or go to the Faith Formation office during Church and business hours.
Remember as well that when you are registering your child for Religious Education classes you can also sign-up yourself to be a catechist or aide. The Faith Formation staff will be happy to answer questions and get you involved.
In a few short weeks the women of our parish will host the annual women’s ACTS retreat. An ACTS retreat is a three day, three night Catholic lay retreat presented by fellow parishioners who have attended an ACTS Retreat. The retreat begins Thursday evening ending Sunday at St Hyacinth followed by a Return Meal and fellowship celebration with the Retreatant's family.
In their commitment to spread the Gospel Message, St Hyacinth offers retreats annually for men in January and for women in September. Activities during the retreat focus on love of Christ through Adoration, Community, Theology, and Service, from which the ACTS acronym is derived.
The ACTS retreat weekend can be a powerful and enduring personal conversion experience. Activities conducted during the weekend give Retreatants a better understanding of the significance and importance of prayer, Liturgy, the Sacraments, Scripture, community, service and healing. It is a powerful community building experience for St Hyacinth parish. The Goal of the Retreat is to deepen one’s personal relationship with Jesus Christ and His Church.
Finally, As you may know, our Diocese is in the midst of the IGNITE Capital Campaign. Every parish in the Archdiocese will be participating in the campaign at different times. Our time is now. We will be kicking off the campaign this September. I am excited for the opportunity to not only serve our Archdiocese, but to use the monies raised for some much needed improvements here at St Hyacinth. I think we can all agree out Parish Hall would benefit from flooring and lighting upgrades. With your help, this campaign will give us the funds necessary to make the upgrades and improve our parish home. More information about the Archdiocese IGNITE campaign will be forthcoming over the next few weeks.
