Today’s celebration of the Body and Blood of Christ originated in the Diocese of Liege in 1246, under the title of the feast of Corpus Christi. Under the Vatican II reforms, the feast of Corpus Christi was combined with the feast of the Precious Blood (July 1) to become the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of the Christ.
Today we honor the gift of Christ Body and Blood. The gift of the Eucharist must be shared. The words that Jesus speaks in our Gospel are the same words that are spoken at every Eucharistic celebration. In the sharing of the Body of Christ, we become the Body of Christ. As we are transformed by the Eucharist, we not only become Disciples, but co-workers in the vineyard of Christ. By coming to the table of the Lord, we take the very life of Jesus into our own being.
This weekend STHY will conduct the Archdiocese annual Corpus Christi collection for the support of the men studying for the Priesthood for our Archdiocese. I encourage everyone to please be generous in supporting our seminarians. Our Archdiocesan seminarians study not only at St. Mary’s seminary here in Houston, but also in seminaries in Dallas and San Antonio Texas, St. Benedict Louisiana, and Rome. This Sunday’s ENTIRE church collection goes towards the costs associated with the operating of St. Mary’s Seminary as well as the expenses of the education of seminarians, the continuing education of priests and the training of permanent deacons and laity. Thank you for your generosity.
As we enter the Summer months of 2019, let us all think of ways in which we can make life easier for ourselves and the parish. Recall that our electronic payment system, Faith Direct, is an easy and secure way to see that your offertory contributions to the church are made on a timely basis. It is an easy and wonderful way to contribute to the church. You can register in less than five minutes by logging on to www.faithdirect.net and entering our parish code of TX526. From there a few short steps will have you set up as you wish: weekly, monthly, special collections, etc. You can pay by credit card or bank draft. It’s convenient, fast and secure. Writing checks has become almost obsolete for so many of us, so please add the church to your list of those you contribute to online. It helps us tremendously with less bank fees on our end, too. Thank you for your generosity and support of STHY.
Summer is officially here and that means Vacation Bible School. Registration continues for this yearly event which will be held July 9 - 13 in Guyot Hall. This year’s theme will be “Roar: Life is Wild - God is good.” This VBS event is a wonderful time for our young people to explore their relationship with Christ and the Church. Last year VBS had over 170 kids participating along with over 50 teen and adult volunteers helping our young people grow in their relationship with Christ and the Church. Go to the STHY Facebook page or website to review VBS 2018. If you have time to volunteer, the Vacation Bible School would be a great place for you to help. Please continue to pray for the young people of our parish.
As we gear up for the summer, I want to make you all aware of the 2019 Annual Archdiocesan Youth Conference which takes place this year on July 26th -28th at the Hilton Americas Hotel/ George R. Brown Convention Center in downtown Houston under the theme “Surrender to God” The primary focus for A.Y.C. is to rejuvenate the faith life of our youth, to help them get serious about life in Christ and His Church, and to learn the truth of the Gospel. Registration for A.Y.C. 2019 is currently underway.
Finally, as you know this past May, I celebrated the 10th anniversary of my ordination. To celebrate the occasion, my ordination class has planned a pilgrimage of the Footsteps of Paul. Out of the fifthteen men that were ordained in my class, eight of us will be participating in this pilgrimage. Please pray for me and the rest of the men of our ordination class as we journey to retrace the steps of St. Paul in prayer and honor. STHY will be in my prayers during this pilgrimage.
