Jesus lays aside all culture rules in dealing with Samaritan women in this week’s Sunday Gospel. After her encounter with Jesus, the Samaritan woman departs to tell others about Jesus. What are we doing in our lives to spread the good news of Jesus? When we encounter Jesus in the Eucharist, our duty is go forth from the Mass to share our encounter with others so that they may come to a greater relationship with God through Jesus Christ.
Last year, Charles Pitman of our parish was accepted by Cardinal DiNardo as a candidate for ordination for the permanent diaconate for Galveston- Houston. On March 18 th Mr. Pitman was formally instituted in the Ministry of Reader by Bishop Sheltz at St. Mary’s Seminary. As part of our parish in recognizing this important step for Mr. Pitman, Today at the 10:00 Mass we will present Mr. Pitman and his wife, Pamella with the Lectionary for Sunday Mass. Please pray for and congratulate Charles on this important step in his formation to become a Permanent Deacon in the Church.
By now I hope everyone has received a copy of “ Resisting Happiness” by Matthew Kelley. (There still maybe a few copies still left in the narthex of the Church). The reason I am encouraging everyone here at STHY to read this wonderful book is because it will allow us to reexamine our relationship with God and others to work on improving those relationships. Our Lenten journey is more than about giving up something, but about gaining knowledge about our faith. Please use this special time of lent to explore and examine your faith.
Every Friday during Lent, from 5-7:30 p.m., the K of Cs serve a delicious fish dinner in the Parish Hall. Be sure and thank the Knights for their hard work on the dinners. Also following the Lent Fish dinners, on Fridays we will have Stations of the Cross in the church beginning at 7:00 p.m. It’s a great way to spend a Friday evening and come for dinner and stay for Stations.
We will have a Frist communion Retreat on this coming Saturday, March 25 th here at St Hyacinth. There will be approximately 40 young people that will be receiving first communion this year. This retreat will be the first retreat that many of these young people have ever been a part of and it will be a fun day for them to work on their relationship with Christ through the Eucharist. Let us continue to pray for the young people of our parish and their parents and families.
We will have our annual Lenten Penance Service on Wednesday March 29th at 7:00 pm in the Church. We will have multiple priest confessors available for the Sacrament of Reconciliation that night. I encourage you to come and experience this most powerful and healing sacrament. Especially if you haven’t been to confession in a long time, now would be an ideal time to come and be reconciled to God and the Church.
Mark your calendars for Sunday May 7th, for our annual Parish Spring Festival. This will be our fifth festival for our parish in close to 20 years. The Springs Festival theme this year is ‘50’s Sock hop.” Raffle ticket packets are available and tickets are on sale now. I highly encourage you to make your commitment to helping our parish at the Bazaar.
For 52 years, St Hyacinth has been building on the foundation of God’s promise of unconditional love for all people. We stand on the shoulders of the saints who have gone before us, and from this remarkable vantage point, we see what we must do to continue sharing the good news of Jesus Christ and welcoming all people to join us on this incredible journey.
There is no greater joy than making a difference in the world and in the Church, and I hope you will pray about the difference you can make through your generous support. To be successful, we need every St. Hyacinth member to participate in our Capital campaign. Your gift of sacrifice will reflect God’s love at work in the world for generations to come.
Our challenge is great, but so too is our faith – a faith that has carried our church for a half a century. Just as the saints of the past took leaps of faith, preparing the way for future generations, so too will we take a leap of faith, imagining and building a vital St. Hyacinth for the next fifty years and beyond. Together we will continue Building faith Family and the future.
