August 21, 2020Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ.
In this week’s Sunday Gospel reading, after the Apostle Peter confesses that Jesus is “the Christ, the son of the living God”, Jesus makes his own profession about Peter, “You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church”. As Catholics and members of the Universal Church, we treasure this verse as the biblical foundation of the ministry of the pope who leads from the chair of St. Peter. The story in today’s gospel reading from Matthew leads to discussions of the role of Peter and the development of the papacy in the Church. Within our Church, the role of Pope is a unifying force that draws us into communion with each other and the world.
We are living in constantly changing times, but two things that are not changing are our devotion to our parish and it's needs. We know many of our lives have been turned upside down in the last 5 months. The STHY has been too. We need, same as you, to know what's coming in so we can budget what goes out. Open our Hearts: a Pastoral letter on racism was released in 2018 by the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops. The USCCB describes this letter as “But racism still profoundly affects our culture, and it has no place in the Christian heart. This evil causes great harm to its victims, and it corrupts the souls of those who harbor racist or prejudicial thoughts. The persistence of the evil of racism is why we are writing this letter now.” I am challenging every one of our parish to go download this letter and review it. The Knights of Columbus Council 10574 are taking orders for a Tamale Sale. Tamales will be available in Pork, Chicken, or Bean and can be mild or spicy. The cost is $12.00 per dozen and all profits from the sale will be donated to the church. Orders can be placed by email at srod52@gmail.com and by text or phone at 956-245-5237. Pick up day will be September 19, 2020 from 9:00 AM until 1:00 PM by drive through in the church parking lot on "P" Street. Thank you for supporting the Knights of Columbus and the Church.
Registration for Faith Formation classes has begun. All classes for all grades will be offered online through January 2021.
